(Zenit.org).- On Monday, Jan. 23, about 400,000 people marched in defense of the unborn in the United States capital. Despite the cold January weather and persistent rain, people from all over the country, as well as many international visitors, joined in the annual demonstration marking the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the United States 39 years ago.

Those not purposely following the event, however, could well be forgiven for missing it entirely -- in what has become a ritual counterpart to the march itself, the mainstream news media, both local and national, paid little attention.

Coverage of the march in the local newspaper, The Washington Post, has received criticism for its failure to present a complete image of the event. An editorial published in the Post on Friday the 27th criticized the photography in particular, noting that there was not a single wide shot of the march that might have given an indication of its scale, as well as the extent of coverage granted to the comparatively small number of counter-protesters.[1] According to the editorial, the Post does not estimate crowd size at such events, although a report regarding the national Occupy movement's "Occupy Congress" march on the 17th apparently ignored this policy when it ventured to guess that the event drew 1,000 to 1,500 people -- less than a hundred times fewer demonstrators than those estimated to have attended the March for Life.[2] The title of the Post article in Tuesday's edition referenced "thousands of youths" being in attendance, which, while technically accurate, seems quite myopic for a news agency which claims to strive for unbiased reporting.[3]

Football’s fundamental rules are not difficult to understand. There is little ambiguity about them, given the fact that they are clearly explained in an official rule book. Although a noteworthy parallel exists between football and human freedom, the fundamental rules for the use of the latter, despite being written in stone, are commonly a source of confusion and controversy. If you’ll pardon the allusion to a popular childhood game, here we have an example of paper beating rock!

The rules for football are ordered toward the goal of the game, which is to win, and the rules impact a team’s ability to achieve the goal. A team that has more points than its opposition at the end of the game wins. The rules must be strictly honored, however, if a team is to move down the field in a sustained effort to score points. Infractions of the rules—encroachment, pass interference, unnecessary roughness, etc.— are met with penalties of various lengths of yards, which send a team in the wrong direction. Persistent or untimely violation of the rules severely hampers a team’s chances of scoring and eventually winning. Rule infractions and penalties are self-defeating: A team must move forward toward its goal if it hopes to win.

Shouts of “kill this bill” and “one man, one woman” thundered throughout Lawyer’s Mall in Annapolis on Monday night. Also known as the State House Square, it is situated between the Maryland State House and the Governor’s residence, and it was to both that the crowd, estimated at more than 2,000 people, was directing its cries. Once again, marriage is under threat in the state of Maryland.

The Civil Marriage Protection Act, which would redefine marriage as including unions by two people of the same sex, was defeated last year but has been resurrected, this time with the endorsement of Maryland’s Governor, Martin O’Malley. And the pressure is on. First Lady Catherine Curran O’Malley, referring to the defeat of last year’s failed attempt, blamed it on “some cowards,” a statement she quickly regretted, as it fueled the determination of the current bill’s opponents and cast a shadow over the noble sheen of “understanding, compassion and justice” that “same-sex marriage” advocates are invoking.

Knowing that they do not have the necessary support to push this bill through the usual approval process, advocates are attempting to manipulate the process. It is being rushed, in the hopes that the bill can be pushed through the Senate and a combination of House committees, since the House of Delegates Judiciary Committee does not have enough votes on its own for success.

This past week we celebrated the pro-life movement with the March for Life. We also celebrated the feast day of Saint Paul’s conversion on the road to Damascus. Such occasions allow us to reflect about the hearts and minds that have been changed by the beautiful truth of the Gospel message via the powerful affirmation of life and love found in the Theology of the Body.

Blessed Pope John Paul II focuses on the importance of self-gift and the need for interior conversion throughout the Theology of the Body. The late pope describes how God calls us to express love and give life through our bodies. We have been inundated with so many self-serving messages about our bodies being mere instruments for pleasure that the pope’s message can seem to be an unrealistic challenge. And yet so many of us are longing for more than the empty, heartbreaking and lifeless approach to relationships and sexuality that our secular culture presents to us. We are recognizing how the secular outlook leads to unstable and unhealthy relationships, broken families and the scourge of abortion.

“The Obama administration has just told the Catholics of the United States, ‘To Hell with you!’ There is no other way to put it. To Hell with your religious beliefs. To Hell with your religious liberty. To Hell with your freedom of conscience.” With unusually strong language, Bishop David Zubik of Pittsburgh alerted his flock to a new threat to the Church.

The Obama administration has directly and deliberately attacked our fundamental right to religious freedom, and in a most patronizing way. His Department of Health and Human Services has mandated that contraceptives and abortion inducing drugs be part of every health care plan, free of charge. With this decision, Catholics and Catholic institutions such as hospitals, universities and social agencies will be forced to pay for and provide contraception, sterilization and abortifacient drugs.

With a veritable pat on the head, the administration has given Catholics a year to comply with the ruling. Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S Conference of Catholic Bishops wrote, “In effect, the president is saying we have a year to figure out how to violate our consciences.”

As we move closer to the November presidential elections, it is becoming clear that the increasing violations of religious liberty by the Obama administration will be the defining issue for Catholics.

Following the January 24 announcement that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has affirmed its controversial ruling which mandates that almost all employer health plans fully cover contraception, sterilization procedures and abortion-inducing drugs, Cardinal-designate Timothy M. Dolan expressed outrage that both the U.S. Constitution and the clearly expressed position of the Church were being ignored by an out of control administration. In this unprecedented confrontation between the Roman Catholic Church and the federal government (see video), Archbishop Dolan called on Americans to bring the issue to their elected officials.

In agreement with Archbishop Dolan, Patrick Reilly, president of the Cardinal Newman Society, argued (here and here) that HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius’s claims of “balance” between considerations of religion and Planned Parenthood ideology were absurd. Sebelius’s refusal to adequately weigh the concerns of religious organizations leaves the only remaining recourse to be the federal courts or the November elections.

How would you respond if while out one night with friends one of them admitted to you that she had no interest in being Catholic because Catholics can’t think for themselves? Or that they seem always to be preoccupied with guilt?

How would you respond if one day your thirteen year old suddenly announced that he no longer believed in God?

What did you say when the news was swimming with Nancy Pelosi’s claim that St. Augustine himself did not believe a baby already three months in the womb could be considered a human life?

And what are you saying in response to the January 20 statement by Secretary Kathleen Sebelius of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) regarding her decision that almost all employers’ health plans must fully cover contraception, sterilization procedures and abortion-causing drugs?

Benedict’s Corner is a weekly summary of our Holy Father’s latest words on topics related to HLI America’s mission.

Pardon the cliché, but you can make a difference. Really. Each one of you reading this blog right now is willed, personally, by God, and entrusted by Him with a share in His mission that only you can accomplish. I know this might sound like a sales pitch, but it isn’t. It is wonderfully, and gravely, true.

The fact that we each are called to make a difference was the theme of Pope Benedict XVI’s addresses this past week.

At the end his Sunday Angelus, (during which the Holy Father stressed the importance of the spiritual director who helps one to discover the voice of God in his life), Pope Benedict commented on the plight of migrants, emphasizing that they are not statistics but men and women, children and elderly in search of a place to live in peace. What is more, in their suffering they are not only the recipients of the new evangelization but are also called to be, themselves, its protagonists. Again, each of us is called to make a difference! Though one may be a victim of circumstances and truly suffer grave injustice at times, this “victim” status does not deprive a person of the irreplaceable contribution he or she offers not only to natural society, but also to the divinely instituted society of the Church.

On January 19, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI addressed a group of American bishops in Rome for their ad limina visits and gave them their marching orders. He let them know, in no uncertain terms, that America cannot rest on her laurels of religious freedom. The Church and all she represents are under assault in the United States:

[I]t is imperative that the entire Catholic community in the United States come to realize the grave threats to the Church’s public moral witness presented by a radical secularism which finds increasing expression in the political and cultural spheres. The seriousness of these threats needs to be clearly appreciated at every level of ecclesial life. Of particular concern are certain attempts being made to limit that most cherished of American freedoms, the freedom of religion. Many of you have pointed out that concerted efforts have been made to deny the right of conscientious objection on the part of Catholic individuals and institutions with regard to cooperation in intrinsically evil practices. Others have spoken to me of a worrying tendency to reduce religious freedom to mere freedom of worship without guarantees of respect for freedom of conscience.

If you, like most parents, are anxious about how to impart a healthy and moral view of sexuality to your children, a coalition of ”experts” want to come to your rescue. They have decided what your children need to know about sex and when they need to know it.

The Journal of School Health published the special report, National Sexuality Education Standards: Core Content and Skills, K–12. The purpose of these standards is to make a radical agenda normative for all public schools in the United States.

According to the “experts,” what should your child know? By the end of the second grade, your child needs to, “Identify different kinds of family structures,” which means that they not only want your child to know about traditional two-parent families, single-parent families, blended divorced families and gay-parent families, but they want them to see each of these as equally acceptable and good. In addition, by the end of the second grade your child should be able to, “Provide examples of how friends, family, media, society and culture influence ways in which boys and girls think they should act.” Notice how family is lumped in with the media, society and culture as just another source of influence to be critically evaluated – by children in the second grade.
